I played golf with Joseph yesterday at UNC's Finley Golf Course. I made the turn at 38, and was really hitting the ball well. I missed a couple putts in the 3-6 foot range. After 15, I was sitting at 4 over par. This was the exact same position I was in when I broke 80 the first time this summer. I knew I had to go bogey-bogey-bogey to shoot a 79, and that's exactly what I did in August.
So I'm thinking, "Hey I've done this before. I don't have to bogey out. How low can we go? :-)" On 16 (handicap #1), I almost put my drive out of bounds. I had to punch out, hit up on the green, and two putt for bogey. No. 17 is a par 5, I played it conservatively (4 iron, 8 iron, and sandwedge to about 18 feet). Just missed the birdie putt.
No. 18 is a par 4, 345 yards. I was debating between hitting a 4 iron or 3 wood off the tee. I ripped the 3 wood to about 80 yards. Approach shot to 25 feet, and made the two-putt for another par and a 77.
The best hole actually came on the front nine. No. 3 is a par 5: short (468 yards) but tough dogleg right (it's handicap #2). I opened up my clubface on 4 iron and let one fade around the corner. It put me at about 205 yards. I hit my 5 iron right at the stick. The ball rolled passed the whole and stopped at about 15 feet. I just missed my eagle putt and tapped in for birdie. I still have never carded an eagle, but that was as close as it's ever come. I made 3 birdies in the round, but also two double bogeys that really could have been avoided. That's golf, huh?
Fun day with Joseph yesterday. Happy Birthday, Joseph. More on Joseph's 7th birthday party today!
